My daughter incurred a 29-day NICU stay during which time I rented a Medela Symphony for at-home use to build up my milk supply. While in her private-room NICU, I used the Ameda Elite. Once I finished my month long rent of the Medela Symphony and after using the Ameda pump in the NICU, I can honestly say that I prefer the Philips Avent pump above Medela and Ameda products for several reasons:
1. Philips Avent is better designed for virtually all nipple sizes (by removing the silicone petal device). This is very important when you as a new mom are forced to pump if you ever hope to breastfeed your baby when he/she gets well. What no woman realizes about pumping until you're forced to learn is that your nipples change sizes during the actual pumping process. And the nipple size fluctuates for the first 4 weeks of your baby's life based on how frequently and how long you pump (every 2 versus ever 3 hours and for 15 versus 20 minutes). The longer you pump and the more frequently you pump, your nipples enlarge tremendously. (which by the way they do return to normal size between pumpings)
2. Philips Avent is not pre-programmed for an automatic 2-minute rapid, shallow let-down sequence followed by a 13 or 18 minute slower, deep sequence (unlike the Medela products). You can set your own pace with however long it takes your milk to let down and then pace however long you need to get your milk out.
3. Philips Avent allows you to accommodate for nipple soreness that invariably occurs with pumping. Honestly, I found the Philips Avent to cause the least amount of soreness compared to the hospital grade Medela and Ameda. I personally felt that the Ameda caused the most soreness based on how the pulley system works within the pump and how it's hard to measure out the vacuum suction on the Ameda pump.
4. Philips Avent and Ameda both are better designed to prevent milk from getting into the tubing system that connects the breast flanges to the actual pump. Bad on Medela for allowing milk to escape into the tubing, especially when you first start pumping within the first 6 hours of your baby's life. That colostrum is more important than the milk itself and when you see your colostrum getting into the tubing of the Medela Symphony, you get very angry as a first-day postpartum mother dealing with your crazy hormone roller coaster.
5. Philips Avent is much more quiet for at work than the Medela Pump in Style and Ameda Purely Yours. Very important when the people in the next office potentially may hear the suctioning. I equate the experience to being in a quiet bathroom and everyone can your hear you urinate.
As an aside with being forced to pump, the Pumpin' Pals brand of breast flanges are amazing! When your milk supply finally comes in but doesn't come out (engorgement--ouch!), the Pumpin' Pals brand is the best way to go. Visit your local Breastfeeding Resource Center at your local hospital--the lactation consultants are an incredible resource.

I had the single manual pump from Avent with my first child and now I have this one. I am able to pump much more milk in short time (usually about 10 minutes) and I am not sore.

Initially I bought this pump because it was part of a good, integrated milk storage/feeding system (pump directly to bottles used to feed and store, etc. I used the pump for about three months before encountering issues - the pump stopped powering on. This has nothing to do with the valves as some reviews note, its electrical. However, when it "died" I called Philips AVENT customer service (their toll-free number was very easy to find online) and they overnight-shipped a new pump to me, no problem. Because of the timing (it was on a Saturday) the pump didn't come until Tuesday, during which time I borrowed a friend's Medela pump, which gave me a chance to compare. I was so glad to have my AVENT back, it is so much easier to clean and operate! The few issues people note about leaks can be avoided if you follow the instructions to assemble the pump body wet, however the design could be improved to make it stand upright on its own and to seal better to the bottles, the way the collars/caps do. The washable components are bigger than the Medela parts, but far easier to clean and SEE that you have them clean. The let-down petals are also much more comfortable and less prone to dripping when you finish pumping than the Medela flanges.
Overall, even with the failure and replacement I would recommend the AVENT pump (and its easy-to-use bottle system) over the Medela immediately. All pumps have some complaints, and I found this to be the best feasible. Its also far cheaper!
